Historical Review:

In June 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of France, invaded Russia. He began this campaign full of confidence, since, five years earlier, he had crushed the armies of Tsar Alexander I and forced him to sign a humiliating treaty in Tilsit. The Grand Armée, as his army was known, formed a contingent of 554,000 men and was widely regarded as the best in Europe. Historians have argued that the famous corporate military spirit of the Grand Armée was missing on the eve of the campaign of 1812. The Emperor's commanders, furthermore, were concerned about the difficulties of keeping the supplies to this vast number of men in a vast and sterile country like Russia. The campaign, however, was far from disastrous in its early stages.
