Historical review:

The need for the creation of troops accustomed to the hot Moroccan climate, with knowledge of the native language, the terrain, and the enemy’s way of fighting, had already become evident during the Melilla campaign of 1908-1909. However, shortly afterwards, the public opinion had claimed against sending reserve troops to Morocco, an action that resulted in what was known as the “Tragic Week” of Barcelona. All this led the military high command to set up a unit made up of Moroccans under peninsular commanders that should become the spearhead of the Spanish army in its African campaigns.
